Martinique island

Is an overseas region of France located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is located to the northwest of Dominica, to the south of St Lucia and to the southeast of Barbados. With a land surface area of 1100 km², the island is one of the smallest French regions, with a population of 403 688 inhabitants at the last census in 2007. It comprises of 34 municipalities and its administrative and commercial capital is Fort-de-France.

Over the last thirty years, the epidemiological profile of the Martinican population has changed considerably, with an increase in life expectancy and the progressive aging of the inhabitants. The involvement of many risk factors still poorly known and the recent enthusiasm about environmental issues and their impact on people's health place cancer among the top priorities of local and national health authorities.

Each year 1500 new individuals are affected by cancer in Martinique while the number of cancer deaths is around 500 per year.
